Any tourist or foreign visitor in Qatar should know how to give respect to Qatar’s culture. Every country has a different culture and traditions. Aside from finding the fun spots in Qatar, it would also be a better and memorable experience if tourists lived like one of the Qataris during their vacation.
1. Study Their Culture and Traditions
A foreigner or a tourist would be greatly culture-shocked upon arriving in Qatar even if it had adopted certain liberal policies. While it is not required for foreigners and tourists to adhere to muslim principles, the best way to show respect is to observe their rules and regulations. Study their culture and traditions and know how to interact with people.
2. Interacting With Locals
Handshakes are normal in the western and westernized countries, but in Qatar, you need to temper your action. When you greet males, you can greet them with a handshake if you’re a male and bow to them if you’re a female. In Qatar as per Islamic law, unmarried men and women cannot touch. A female offering to shake a male’s hand feels respected if the male bows instead of reaching out.
3. Clothing
While locals dress conservatively in Qatar and foreigners and tourists are not bound by the Islamic laws, it is important to be bound by the same dress code to show sensitivity to the Qatari ideals of decency. Women could dress modestly, avoiding more liberal clothing. There would be no need to cover the head. For men, it is important to wear knee length shorts and anything baring the shoulders should be avoided.
