Qatar had almost lost its chance to host the FIFA World Cup in 2022 after stakeholders assessed the country’s capability to handle the games during summer or winter. However, According to Secretary General of Qatar’s 2022 Organizing Committee Hassan Al-Thawadi, Qatar is ready and has always been ready.
The Qatar stadium, regardless of its controversial exploitation of workers, has an effective cooling system in case the games fall during the summer. According to the Secretary General, if FIFA also wants to stage the event during the winter season, the stadium will still be ready.
Critics of Qatar’s FIFA hosting had split ideas as to when should FIFA start its event. Some argued that it should be during summer to raise the effectiveness of the stadium’s cooling systems. Some said that the Winter season would protect fans and players, but European clubs countered this suggestion saying that they can lose their top players in the middle of the season.
Al-Thawadi was highly intolerant of any suggestions that Qatar should not host the FIFA World Cup. He said that the organisers and the structure itself had complied with all FIFA regulations. Al-Thawadi added that misconceptions about the Gulf and the Middle East may be the cause of these unacceptable suggestions.
